Yankees and Desi Diaspora Funding China

The old Ponzi Scheme of China lending to the US to buy its goods is back in another form, this time even better for the Chinese. How good it is for Yankees and the DD depends on how well India does; on that the jury is out and will be out for years.

Simply put India is buying a ton of stuff from China to modernize its economy. Since we runa a trade deficit the money has to come from somewhere. Foreign investment, invisibles and remittances make up the shortfall.

Why can't we Desi's, clever as we are supposed to be, come up with a scheme where we can sell stuff to other countries paid for by third countries?

China conundrum

A quick and very dirty calculation

India Economy = 4 trillion (PPP)
China Economy = 10 trillion (PPP)

India consumption = .55 to .60 or 2.2 to 2.4 trillion
China consumption = .35 to .40 or 3.5 to 4.0 trillion

India Gini around .4; China Gini around .6.

In totality the rich in China are stiffing the poor even more than in our benighted country; now they are even sending them back to the farms, as our Shiv Sainiks would like to do with our internal migrants. (Be careful about your wishes - growth in Bimaru states will soon leave Mumbai at the mercy of native help).

There should be some really unhappy Chinese around. Will the tanks get them or will they get the tanks, that is the question.

Anna Republic

Anna's 'attractive' traits aside (would you choose to live in Ralegan Siddhi?) just think of this: All things People, such as the People's Republic of China, are no such thing. Be warned by the name of the bill.

Productivity of the Norsemen

Pundits the world over laud the Nordic countries for their education, social cohesion, work ethic, productivity etc.

That was on display yesterday - it took 10+ Pakistani terrorists to knock off 200 Indians but just one Norseman to kill 80 of his brethren.

That implies a productivity difference of 4:1, which I suspect is about what it is in business.

Or is it just the ancient ancestry of loot and pillage?

Alas, one can never tell if anything is due to nature or nature.

Back at the keyboard

I took a year off to write for GQ - that gig is done.

All is clear at last

For years we all thought that our politician's were thugging our green spaces in cities merely to sell them off to their politician friends, or sometimes politician's children. Actually, they are grabbing those spaces to make sure that they are not available to protestors lest they be Cairoed! Its a lot harder to gather in Dharavi and make it look more crowded that it is.
